Todays Guest: Laura Sheehan
Laura Sheehan is a US lawyer and Experienced Expat Career Strategist. Laura has lived in seven countries over the last 15 years and uses that experience to assist other expatriates in their quest to launch a new career, redefine their professional goals or establish a portable professional identity. For many of us working to support international assignees and their partners OR living abroad as employees and partners, we well know how important the partners of international assignees are to the successful outcome of the international assignment. We also know:
- The recruitment of dual career partners for international roles can be challenging as many partners are loath to sacrifice their career or the financial benefits that come from their employment for a relocation abroad.
- For employees who do relocate abroad with their partners, a high percentage of partners (78% in our research, Career Choice and the Accompanying Partner) do want to find professional fulfilment of some kind while living abroad.
- That finding employment in the conventional sense of a 9 - 5 job can be difficult for a range of reasons.
So what to do?
In this weeks THRIVING ABROAD PODCAST Laura Sheehan shares her very personal journey with us, highlighting the challenges, but also the joys and privileges of international life. Her story demonstrates it is without doubt a bitter/sweet experience, but one, that with the right support can be wonderfully life enhancing -both personally and professionally. In our research (Career Choice and the Accompanying Partner) 74% of partners said they would have liked to receive some form of life and career coaching support as they relocated abroad. The vast majority received nothing.
Our conversation illustrates the value of coaching support in terms of supporting partners to answer two pressing questions:
- What is my value?
- How can I find meaningful work?
