Supporting Female Executives to Create Expat Success Abroad
Today on the Thriving Abroad podcast we are recognising International Women’s Day 2019 as we celebrate the contribution that female assignees make as they undertake international roles for organisations around the world. I talk with Gertraud Eregger, an international HR expert and expat transition coach about the strategies and approaches that female executives can take to create professional and personal success abroad and beyond. We also discuss ways organisations can better support them through the experience.

We’ve come a long way since the 1980’s when Adler reported that only 3% of international assignees were female. Now around 20 – 25% of international assignees are female depending on the industry and location in question. An improvement yes, but it is not time to relax just yet.
As organisations increasingly recognise the developmental nature of international roles and the value of a global and international mindset for future leaders, it is imperative that women are given the opportunity to develop those skills on an equal footing to men.
Unless this happens the lack of female representation in global mobility will perpetuate the disproportionate representation of females in leadership roles going forward. There is much work to be done. You can read more about ‘Why women are under-represented in international roles, and what can be done about it’ HERE.
