What are the financial questions you need to ask yourself as an expat - before, during and after you move abroad?

Gone are the days when corporate international moves and expat life meant impressive financial gain. Today support policies aim to be ‘fair’ and ‘keep people whole’ and with many ‘lighter’ packages expats are not always guaranteed to be financially better off by moving abroad.

Add to this the reality that often one partner leaves a work role behind to support an international move and you can see that the financials may not always be the key motivating factor for a move. Indeed, career progression and the international experience are often cited as the key reasons for moving abroad.

All this means that it is important to think through the financials when planning a move - and then keep an eye on them while abroad. It can be easy to put your head in the sand and believe that it will all work out. The truth is - the complexity of your finances is likely to be enhanced not diminished by a relocation abroad. It is worth taking time to think about the potential impact – both positive and negative and how best to manage your finances and assets whilst living abroad

In this podcast - I talk to Daniel Shillito, a financial advisor who specialises in advising expats.  Daniel is a long-term expat himself, currently living in Italy. In our conversation we talk about international relocation from the perspective of financial planning and aim to provide you with a guide to key areas that require consideration.

Health warning - this interview in no way constitutes advice and is a guide to some of the areas that expats should consider when relocating internationally. It is important to seek professional advice from qualified financial accountants and tax advisers who understand the complexity of international financial and tax advice in relation to your personal circumstances.:
